August 2023, a New York State trooper was alerted by a 911 call to the sound of gunshots from one of the city’s apartments. When he arrived, he found two dead bodies - that of a woman and a baby. The dead woman was Dr Krystal Cascetta, a New York City cancer doctor, and the dead baby beside her was her daughter. Their death was later ruled as murder- suicide pact. Dr Krystal Cascetta had killed her baby and then turned the gun on herself. Krystal Cascetta’s case is not the only such case among healthcare professionals in recent times. In May of this same year, Dr Nakita Mortimer’s death by suicide was another massive blow to the community of healthcare professionals in the U.S: where “roughly 300 - 400 physicians die by suicide yearly.” Suicide amongst medical professionals is not happening in the United States alone. Across the entire European hemisphere, the increasing dead by suicide among healthcare professionals has become a regular and worrying trend. The question, why? There are several issues contributing factors. They include 1. Depression. 2. The Emotional Toll of Unreciprocated Caring 3. The Pressure to Perform 4. And, finally - Stigma In spite of the above-listed woes, there is a glimpse of a shining cloud on the horizon for healthcare professionals seeking medical help, because in conjunction with the rise of death by suicide, research on mental health among healthcare professionals has gained traction in recent years. The unspoken mental health battles of healthcare professionals must be acknowledged and addressed. There is a saying that you can only give what you have. We expect healthcare professionals to give us the best care. However, they cannot give us the best unless they are at their best. Therefore, these silent sufferers need support, understanding, and access to mental health resources to give them the best of themselves. And so, the time has come to prioritize the mental well-being of healthcare professionals - for their sake and the sake of the patients they serve.
